![]() I would hope they'd drag their feet long enough so that the logs are long gone by the time the paperwork becomes official and they have to comply. It’s no secret that torrenting is one of the top reasons why people look to acquire a VPN service. Hopefully any reputable VPN, whose whole schtick is keeping people secure, will not be cooperating with these demands on a daily basis. If it's kept for a month, that's more of an issue. If the log is kept for 24 hours, it's gone. If some litigious party wants to get into a torrent swarm to get the IP addresses of all the peers, they're going to have to be damn quick to mail out their warrants or subpoenas or whatever, because if a couple days go by, there will have been about 22 other IP address from all over the place that got assigned that same address at the VPN. The real question is the extent to which a log is kept on the VPN side. So, this becomes a matter of showing a log from the ISP that has the IP address of my residence at time XYZ and then showing a log from the VPN where that IP has connected also at time XYZ. Furthermore, more VPN services use one IP address (internet-facing) for dozens of customers. Is an investigator going to come pick up my cablemodem and router and document their MAC addresses? Most ISP's do not issue a static IP address. They are absolutely storing all ssh public keys they can get. Meanwhile, we know that they have much of VPN cracked, along with SSL attacks and possibly even SSH. That a d one of the first statements NSA said about encrypted data was - if its encrypted, its interesting. They feel they cant trust America because we are pwning all their shit and there are literally no laws to stop it. This is why the EU, Russia and Asia are pissed right now. It is bound by no such laws or compulsory good behavior overseas - its job is to break into all overseas data. At least "in the US", NSA is vound to some set of restrictions and constitutionality of what it collects. ![]() Any time you send data, or packets overseas, someone is grabbing it. Our government collects every peice of foreign data it can (and it gets a lot if not all, since foreign data is its job, after all). Its actually more dangerous to use foreign servers for anything.
